Ann-Marie James: Pareidolia

Edel Assanti Project Space,
276 Vauxhall Bridge Road,
Victoria, SW1V 1BB

25 March – 25 April 2010

Ann-Marie James presents her new exhibition Pareidolia, which refers to a type of illusion or misperception where something vague is mistaken as being something clear and distinct (like seeing the face of Abraham Lincoln in your cereal!).

Pareidolia, 2010

This body of work presents a selection of oil sketches on birch panels designed to provoke occasions of pareidolia. James’s contorted bunches of limbs and body-like shapes are as reminiscent of the extravagant Baroque sketches of the Dutch old masters as they are of the anatomy studies which have inspired her previous works.

In this way, Pareidolia simultaneously presents a critique and celebration of contemporary art’s continual desire to validate itself in a broader art historical context.

Here are some of the pieces:

Haematoma, 2010

Hoist, 2010

Knot Theory, 2010

Trefoil, 2010
